Meeting the Challenge

Dave Orlowski isn't one to back down from a challenge. In 1978 he competed in what became the very first Ironman triathlon to determine who was the best athlete - swimmers, cyclists or runners. Almost 35 years later, he is still challenging himself. This time he is on a quest to compete in and finish every Ironman event within a five-year period - all while battling Leukemia.

Powered by Hope

As she sat in the doctor’s office, waiting to go through another chemotherapy treatment, triathlete Teri Griege of St. Louis, received the phone call that would lift her spirits, allow her to live her dream and give others hope when facing the most dire of circumstances. On the phone was Peter Henning, senior vice president of television production for Ironman, who had called to inform Teri that she had been awarded a slot as an inspirational participant in the 2011 Ironman Championships. Very few people, including Teri, thought that this moment would ever happen after her initial diagnosis of colorectal cancer two years earlier.

Where The Road Meets The River

The Missouri, Illinois and Mississippi Rivers converge just north of St. Louis, creating one of the most scenic landscapes in the Midwest. The wide flowing rivers, majestic limestone bluffs, abundance of wildlife and quaint river towns create a breathtaking backdrop for runners and cyclists who visit the area each fall for two of the region’s most popular events. The Great River Road is biked by hundreds of cyclists each October as part of Trailnet’s Ride the Rivers Century Ride, and the road is also home to the Alton Road Runners’ Great River Road 10 Mile Run every November.
